Testing Granite Countertop or Slab for Radon Gas

Yes, there is a chance that radon gas is coming from that wonderful, natural custom granite countertop you had installed. You see, radon is found deep in the earth as a by-product of Uranium. Uranium is deposited along with the granite. In fact, radon can be found in a wide array of building materials that are mined from the earth. To test for radon in a granite counter-top or any other suspected material; we recommend getting at least 3 short term radon test kits (RN-LS). Available at: www.InspectUSA.com for less than $10 each, which includes the lab processing fee.

Basic testing procedure is easy. Set vial #1 in the lowest living space of the home (for example in the basement); If the lowest living space is on the same level as the material to be tested, it is recommended to set the unit on the opposite location of vial #2 (other side of the home).

Set vial #2 in one of the rooms on the same level as the granite countertop to be tested (den, study etc); preferably a room where the door can be closed for the duration of the testing period.

Set vial #3 near the counter-top to be tested approximately 20” away from the surface.

Follow the instruction sheet provided with the radon gas test vials. The testing duration is from 48 to 96 hours. The test vials must be returned to our lab within 7 days after ending the test. Results will be available the next business day after receiving the vials back in the lab.
