Lutron SP-82UV Pocket UV Light Meter, Wide Range, 250 to 390 nm, Auto Ranging

The Lutron SP-82UV measures ultraviolet irradiance in a pocket sized instrument. The sensor is built into the body, the meter auto ranges across the whole span from 1 µW/cm² up to 20 mW/cm², and the "bone" shaped case with its wristlet is made to be worked one handed — held out into the light while the display is read.

The sensor covers a band pass of 250 to 390 nm with a cosine correction filter, so light arriving at an angle is weighted the way a flat surface actually receives it. Calibration is performed under UVA light against a standard UVA meter.

Readings are frozen with the hold button, and a record function captures maximum and minimum with recall. The display reverses on command so the meter can be read comfortably whichever way it is being held, and a backlight makes it usable in a darkened room or shaded space.

Ultraviolet light injures eyes and skin, and the damage gives no warning while it is happening. Never look at an energized UV lamp, and never look at the sun. Wear UV rated eye protection and cover exposed skin when working near a UV source.

NOTE: This is not a germicidal meter. Although the sensor band nominally begins at 250 nm, the instrument is calibrated under UVA light against a UVA standard, so a reading taken from a 254 nm germicidal lamp cannot be relied on. For verifying disinfection output, use a dedicated UVC meter such as the UVC-254SD.

Sensor Care

The sensor window is part of the measurement. Keep it clean and free of fingerprints, dust and moisture, and wipe it only with a soft dry cloth. Store the meter dry and out of direct sunlight. A dirty or clouded window reads low, and no calibration can correct for it.
